Adrian Bell Society

Mr Bell came to Suffolk from London in 1920, aged 19. He was first a farm pupil then a farmer and lived in various parts of the county for the next 60 years until his death in September 1980. During that time he wrote 25 books most of which were based on his life and work in Suffolk. His first book, Corduroy, published in 1930, vividly describes his early years on the land when farming depended on the horse to do what man could not. ‘Silver Ley’ and ‘The Cherry Tree’ followed in 1931 and 32 and completed what has become known as The Trilogy. He also contributed many articles to various magazines etc. and for 35 years his Countryman’s Notebook was a feature of the Eastern Daily Press, some ‘Notebook’ essays were published in book form.

The Adrian Bell Society came into being on September 21st 1996 the aim being to encourage interest in the life and works of Adrian Bell. His books are no longer in print but, to help members, the Society runs a scheme whereby books by Mr Bell can be sold to or bought from other members (or swops arranged). This scheme is organised by the Secretary, Mrs M Leighton of 3 The Maltings, Church Close, Coltishall, Norwich, NR12 7DZ and details of wants/availability are contained in the Newsletter. At least two meetings/events are held each year and at least two newsletters issued.

The membership subscription covers the year beginning 1st May and is currently £5.00 with a minimum additional £1 payable when attending any meeting/event.
