This international society was founded in 1997 to promote knowledge of and interest in Ford. Honorary Members include Julian Barnes, A. S. Byatt, Hans-Magnus Enzensberger, Samuel Hynes, Alan Judd, Sir Frank Kermode, Ruth Rendell, Michael Schmidt, John Sutherland, and Gore Vidal. There are currently over one hundred members altogether, from more than ten countries. The Society continues to organize an active programme of events. Besides regular meetings in Britain, we have held conferences in Europe and the U.S.A. Future events are planned in Durham, as well as in France and Germany. Since 2002 we have published an annual series, International Ford Madox Ford Studies, distributed free to members. Ford Madox Ford: A Reappraisal (2002), Ford Madox Ford's Modernity (2003), History and Representation in Ford Madox Ford's Writings (2004), Ford Madox Ford and the City (2005) and Ford Madox Ford and Englishness (2006) are all still available. Ford Madox Ford's Literary Contacts (2007) was recently published. Future issues are planned on Ford and Cultural Transition, Ford and the Visual Arts, and Ford as an editor. If you are an admirer, an enthusiast, a reader, a scholar, or a student of anything Fordian, then this Society wants to hear from you, and welcomes your participation in its activities.
The Society normally organises two events each year, and publishes one or two Newsletters. A celebratory day on 'Ford Madox Ford: Writing and Painting', was staged in January 1998. In 1999 we participated in two conferences: one on Ford and Modernism held in Germany; the other in Kent on Ford, Conrad and James. For 1999-2000 we held a day conference in London on ‘Ford and the City’ and a Ford panel at the 2000 MLA convention in Washington. There were sizeable conferences at the Universities of Bologna in 2001 and Madison-Wisconsin in 2002; one on Ford and Englishness was held in Manchester in 2004. The most recent conference, in Genoa in September 2007, was on Ford and the visual arts. The Society has also inaugurated a series of Ford Lectures, which have been given most recently by A. S. Byatt and Colm Tóibín.
