The texts of writings by Landor not reproduced there are available on application to the Secretary of the Landor Society. The following are a few texts that appear on the CD.

ON THE DOG STAR (Published in 1858)

I hold it unlawful
To question the awful
Appointments of Heaven, or
hazard a doubt;
But needs I must say.
Heaven's Dog had his day,
And Pomero beats the said Dog
out and out.

WHO IS SAFE?

Men always hate
The man that's great,
Nor cease to fall
On him that's small.

from : a poem on the death of his sister
Sharp crocus wakes the froward year:
In their old haunts birds reappear,
From yonder elm, yet black with rain,
The cushat looks deep down for grain
Thrown on the gravel-walk; here comes

The redbreast to the sill for crumbs.
Fly off! Fly off! I can not wait
To welcome ye, as she of late.
The earliest of my friends is gone.
Alas! Almost my only one!

From the first Imaginary Conversation between Aesop and Rhodope

Aesop. Laodameia died: Helen died; Leda, the beloved of Jupiter, went before. It is better to repose in the earth betimes than to sit up late, better, than to cling pertinaciously to what we feel crumbing under us, and to protract an inevitable fall. We may enjoy the present while we are insensible of infirmity and decay: but the present, like a note in music, is nothing but as it appertains to what is past and what is to come. There are no fields of amaranth on this side of the grave: there are no voices, O Rhodope! that are not soon mute, however tuneful: there is no name. with whatever emphasis of passionate love repeated, of which the echo is not faint at last.

T HE LANDOR SOCIETY OF WARWICK.

This society was formed in Warwick on January 30 2000, the 225"' anniversary of the birth of Walter Savage Landor. The aim of the society is to promote knowledge of the life and works of Landor. A programme on Radio 4 in November 2003 helped to make the society better known and the membership now stands at over seventy, with some members recruited from abroad, and nearly half living outside mid-Warwickshire. In recognition of his efforts to make Landor better known. Gabriel Woolf was voted an Honorary Member of the Landor Society in 2003, and he is the first person to he honoured in this way.

Regular meetings are held in the Warwick area and there is a newsletter/magazine twice a year. Membership queries or further details can be obtained from the Secretary, Jean Field, via Warwick Library in Barrack Street, or may be downloaded from the website of the Alliance of Literary Societies.
