John Betjeman (1906-1984) In 1941, JB went to Dublin, as the Press Officer to the British Representative. Many years later, it was revealed that the IRA thought he was a spy, and considered assasinating him. However, on reading his poetry, they decided otherwise. His daughter Candida was born in 1942.Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) prof at Dublin University College 1884-9. In Spring 1889 he contracted typhoid, and died on 8 June aged 44. Buried in the Jesuit plot at Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.
Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) George Bernard Shaw was born in Dublin on 16th July 1856 to George Carr Shaw & Lucinda Elizabeth Gurly at Number Three, Synge Street (now number 33). Educated in Dublin, Trinity where he excelled. Commemorated in Dublin and Ayot St Lawrence. Shaw was not too pleased at the prospect of students learning his works in schools & colleges, he forbade it during his lifetime, saying, "My plays are for pleasure, not instruments of torture".
Bram Stoker (1847-19120, born and lived in Dublin 1847, had a very troubled childhood, riddled with illness
Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) He was in Belfast for a year from the autumn of 1853 then in Donnybrook, near Dublin, working with the post office.
