Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) Manchester 1832. 84 Plymouth Grove was the home of Elizabeth Gaskell from 1850-65, and of her family unti1 1913, the house has very important literary associations, not only with her own work (most of which was written during that period), but because of the other writers who visited her there, including Charles Dickens and Charlotte Brontė. Wrote Mary Barton: A Tale of Manchester Life, as a result of the sights she saw as a minister's wife, published in 1848

Winston Graham (1910-2003) born Victoria Park, Manchester, June 30th, 1910. Spent first years in Manchester till father had stroke and the family left for Perranporth in Cornwall.

Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) worked with the Manchester Guardian, as foreign correspondent.
