| Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) born Ovingham, (10-12 miles west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) at Cherryburn, a farmhouse. This house has now been turned into a museum of his life and work. Died in Nov 1828 at his home 19 West Street, Gateshead (Tyne & Wear). Buried at Ovingham. His parents, brother John Bewick and all his children are buried there also. There is a commemorative plaque in the church. Wilfrid Gibson (1878-1962) b.Hexham
Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) Travelling in Europe in 1839 when she fell ill and was brought to Newcastle to be near her medical brother-in-law, Thomas Michael Greenhow. Moved to lodgings in Tynemouth, where she spent five years as an invalid, suffering from a prolapsed uterus and ovarian cyst.
Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) lived in Lowick 1947-49
