Lewis Carroll (1832-98), lived in Croft-on-Tees, from 1843-1868 when his father died. His mother and father's grave is at St Peter's Church. Lewis Carroll went to school in Richmond in 1844.
Charles Dickens Bowes - In the village is the school on which Charles Dickens modelled 'Dotheboys Hall' in Nicholas Nickleby, and William Shaw, the schoolmaster on whom he based the character Wackford Squeers, is buried in St Giles's churchyard. Bowes Castle has a huge 12th-century keep.
