Jane Austen (1775-1817) visited Great Bookham where her godfather, Revd. Samuel Cooke lived. Emma has a scene on the nearby Box Hill.
Lewis Carroll (1832-1898),Lived in Guildford with his family from 1868 at The Chestnuts. Died in Guildford, 14th January, 1908.
William Cobbett (1763-1835) b 9th March 1763 at The Jolly Farmer public house, Farnham, renamed The William Cobbett. He worked for some time as gardener for the Bishop of Winchester at Farnham Castle. In 1779 he took up a two year residency with Rev. James Barclay of Guildford where he learns the value of a good library. He spent his last years farming at Normandy, north of Farnham and died from influenza, 18 June 1835, buried in the churchyard of Farnham Parish Church.
Warwick Deeping (1877-1950) purchased the house known as "Eastlands" at Weybridge in Surrey. He lived there from 1919, puruing a successful career as an author until his death on 20th April, 1950.
George Macdonald (1824-1905) After the death of his beloved wife in 1902, MacDonald's own health deteriorated significantly—and shortly afterwards he suffered a stroke. This left him partially paralysed, and he returned to England to live in a house built for him by his eldest son at Haslemere, Great Tangley Manor, Near Guildford, St. George's Wood, Haslemere, Ashtead, Surrey. He died after a long illness at Sagamore, Ashtead, the home of his youngest daughter, Lady Troup, on 18 September 1905. His ashes after cremation at Woking were buried in the English cemetery at Bordighera.
