Charlotte Bronte (1816-55) b Thornton, lived in Haworth: educ Cowan Bridge, edu and taught at Mirfield. The three sisters lived in the town while their father, Patrick, was a curate there in 1809-11. Healds House School on Dewsbury Moor, where Charlotte taught, is the 'Whinbury' of her novel Shirley. Governess in Lothersdale. d Haworth aged 38

Emily Bronte (1818-48) b Thornton, lived in Haworth: edu Cowan Bridge,Mirfield and Dewsbury. d of tuberculosis at Haworth aged 31

John Meade Falkner (1858-1932) Meade Falkner was a great traveller and an authority on Churches in all parts of the world, but he loved Beverley Minster.

J B Priestley (1894-1984) John Boynton Priestley was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, 13th September 1894, the son of a schoolmaster.

Leo Walmsley (1892-1966) born at 7, Clifton Place, Shipley in West Yorkshire. Blue plaque fixed, 1997. From 1894-1913, cottage in King Street, Robin Hood's Bay. Blue plaque fixed by Whitby Phil. Society, 1968 (Long before Walmsley Society inaugurated). Later he lived at Leith Rigg, near Robin Hood's Bay. Converted barn into house, 1930s.
